Brazilian volleyball officially accepts transgender athletes

The Brazilian Volleyball Federation (CBV) has recently revealed the policy of eligibility for transgender athletes to participate in tournaments in this country.

Accordingly, CBV has followed the rules approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at the end of 2021 about transgender athletes who will participate in tournaments based on the regulations of each sports federation because each subject will have specific characteristics.

In addition, CBVs are also based on the regulations of the World Volleyball Federation as well as the Health Council to offer a separate policy for transgender athletes.

CBV said they were the first sports federation in Brazil to allow transgender athletes to attend as a way to promote gender equality and attach importance to the variety of sports based on clear and transparent indicators.

Accordingly, transgender athletes become required to declare their gender as female and not change that information within a minimum of 4 years. In addition, they need to prove that their total testosterone is lower than 5nmol/l for 12 consecutive months and must be maintained like that.

Transgender athletes from female Thanh Nam can participate in much easier conditions. In both cases, responsibilities need to be clearly done by the players.

This decision of CBV takes effect after 12 months announcement, athletes can participate in national competitions. Thus, only a while more will have more transgender athletes present at Superliga.

Currently, the most famous case in Brazil is Tifanny Abreu, transgender in 2014 and started playing in volleyball content since 2017.
